Pedestrians take over Liberty Bridge for the fourth time this summer – Photos

Summer is the time when the Liberty Bridge becomes one of the most popular and atmospheric “pop-up hang-out spots” of Budapest, as it is closed off from traffic. Everyone is encouraged to organise events on the bridge, which becomes an official pedestrian zone for the weekends.

Port.hu reports that the Liberty Bridge is closed off from traffic between 6 July and 28 July every weekend (from Friday midnight to Sunday midnight), which means that the people of Budapest can take over the bridge for a cold one with friends, or they can attend several events that are being organised.

Valyo

The Liberty Bridge project is organised by volunteers of Valyo – Város és Folyó Egyesület (Valyo – City and River Association), who provide electricity, water, and toilets from donations. Visit their website to find out more about their projects, that aim to bring the river closer to Budapest’s citizens. You can also donate to their cause.

Everyone is welcome to organise their own events on the bridge; all you have to do is contact the organisers at szabihid@valyo.hu.

Make sure to check the rules and regulations before you visit the bridge:

• Bring your own food and drinks, no sales.
• Toilets are available at the Buda side bridgehead.
• Do not litter on the bridge; use the trash cans.
• Do not climb above the indicated areas on the bridge.
• Always pay attention to your surroundings.
• Make sure to take home everything you bring to the bridge (including chairs and pillows).
•  Do not sit at the appointed bike paths (the South part of the sidewalk).
• No political events of any kind.
